Quota Work Permit
A quota work permit is designed to assist South African companies where skill shortages exist. As a developing nation South Africa lacks in certain professions the necessary 'manpower' in meeting its Human Resource needs. This impacts on both the company and the economy.
In order to address this and encourage skilled migrants, a quota list is produced that highlights the professions where a skill shortage exists. If employing a foreigner it is always worth checking whether a quota permit is option in terms of making a work permit application.
The main advantages of obtaining a quota permit include:
-
The applicant does not need a job offer in order to obtain the permit. Quota permits are issued that allow the individual three months in order to find suitable employment. Once employment is secured the quota work permit is endorsed to that specific employer.
-
Employers do not have to advertise the position and show no South African can be sourced to carry out the job role (as with a general work permit). As the profession is on the published quota list the Department of Home Affairs is already satisfied in this regard.
