Work Permit - General

A general work permit is governed under the ethos of protecting South Africans from an undue amount of foreigners taking up local positions. This policy is common with most countries immigration policies as they seek to ensure that work visa’s are granted only in cases whereby their own citizens cannot be sourced to fill the vacancy.

It therefore follows the burden of proof which lies within the fact every effort has been made to recruit a South African and the foreigner being offered the position is skilled to fill the post.

There are many occasions when this situation is applicable, obvious examples being the need for foreign languages or where the profession has not been included on the quota list but there is indeed a shortage of skills in this area. Many work permits are granted under this category.

The general work permit application needs to show adverts have been placed in South African media to attract applicants, but to no avail, and that the individual is suitable qualified.

The process can be lengthy and general work permits are normally applied for when the applicant doesn’t qualify for any other work permit category.
