Work Permit - General
A general work permit is governed under the ethos of protecting South Africans from an undue amount of foreigners taking up local positions needlessly.. This policy is common with most countries immigration regulations as they seek to ensure that work visa's are granted only in cases where their own citizens cannot be sourced to fill the vacancy.
It therefore follows the burden of proof in making such an application is that every that every effort has been made to recruit a South African to no avail and the foreigner being offered the position is skilled to fill the post.
There are many occasions when this situation is applicable, obvious examples being the need for foreign languages or where the profession has not been included on the quota list but there is indeed a shortage of skills in this area. Many work permits are granted under this category.
The general work permit application needs to show adverts have been placed in South African media to attract applicants, that this has been unsuccessful, so a foreign workers has needed to be recruited that is suitably qualified.
The process can be lengthy and general work permits are normally applied for when the applicant doesn't qualify for any other work permit category.
